Preschool graduation mini sessions are one of my absolute favorite things to photograph. The tiny gowns, the proud little smiles, and that sense of celebration that’s just as big as any high school grad—it’s all so special. And this year, I decided to try something a little different… I brought my own kids along to model for the minis.
My daughter, who’s the perfect age for a preschool grad, was thrilled to put on the cap and gown. She lit up the forest trail and brought all the big girl energy to the session. Now you’d think that being a photographer’s kid, she’d be a total pro in front of the camera—but nope. The second her eyes meet my lens, she pulls a full-on Chandler Bing. Her natural smile vanishes, replaced with the most exaggerated, awkward grin you’ve ever seen. Luckily I was able to work my magic and catch a few of her true smiles but the awkward ones are just as cute and are a part of what makes the photos more her.
And then there’s my 2.5-year-old son. Nowhere near preschool graduation, but absolutely convinced he was supposed to be part of the fun. He climbed into the desk like he owned it, flipped through Dr. Seuss books like he was studying for finals, and launched his little grad cap into the air with pure toddler enthusiasm. It was totally unplanned, ridiculously cute, and ended up being some of my favorite images from the whole session.
There’s something magical about letting kids just be themselves in front of the camera. Whether they’re actually graduating or just tagging along for the snacks, these sessions are about celebrating childhood milestones and making memories that you’ll look back on with a full heart and a big smile.
If you're thinking about preschool or kindergarten grad photos for your little one—whether they're shy, wild, or somewhere in between—I promise we’ll have fun with it. And hey, if their baby brother or sister wants to hop in too, I’ll be ready with the camera.
