Welcoming a new baby is one of the most special—and emotional—times in your life. Newborn photography allows you to preserve all those tiny details, from little fingers and sleepy smiles to soft snuggles and the way your baby curls into your arms.
If you’ve booked a newborn photography session at my Central Alberta studio near Bowden, you may be wondering what to bring, when to feed your baby, or what your family should wear.
I photograph newborns and growing families from Bowden, Olds, Sundre, Innisfail, Red Deer, and the surrounding Central Alberta communities. My goal is to make your newborn photography experience feel comfortable, relaxed, and easy from beginning to end.
Here is everything you need to know before your newborn session.
1. When Is the Best Time to Photograph a Newborn?
Newborn sessions are often scheduled within the first 5–14 days after birth. During this stage, many babies are sleepier and naturally curl into those sweet, womb-like poses.
However, this doesn’t mean beautiful newborn photos can’t be created after the first two weeks. Every baby is different, and lovely images can be captured at any age.
Rather than choosing an exact session date before your baby arrives, I reserve space around your due date. Once your baby is born, we’ll confirm the best day for your session.
I recommend booking during your second or third trimester so we have plenty of time to plan your session and reserve your spot.
2. When Should You Feed Your Baby Before the Session?
A full baby is often a happy and sleepy baby!
If possible, plan to feed your baby shortly before leaving home or once you arrive at the studio. We’ll always allow extra time in case your baby needs another top-up before we begin.
Feeding and cuddling breaks are completely normal during newborn sessions. There is never any pressure to rush—your baby sets the pace.
3. Why Is the Newborn Photography Studio So Warm?
The studio is kept warmer than you may expect during a newborn session. This helps your baby remain comfortable during wrapped or lightly clothed poses.
Parents and siblings may want to dress in light layers so they can stay comfortable throughout the session. You can always bring your final outfit separately and change once you arrive.
4. What Should Parents and Siblings Wear for Newborn Photos?
Simple, timeless clothing usually photographs best for newborn family portraits.
Consider choosing:
- Cream, beige, white, soft grey, or earthy colours
- Soft pastels or muted shades
- Comfortable fabrics with subtle texture
- Clothing without large logos or distracting patterns
You don’t all need to wear the exact same colour. Instead, choose two or three coordinating colours that work nicely together.
Most importantly, wear something that feels comfortable and feels like you. I’m also happy to help with outfit ideas before your session.
5. What Does Your Baby Need to Wear?
You don’t need to purchase special newborn outfits before your session. I provide a carefully selected collection of wraps, headbands, bonnets, textures, and props for you to choose from.
You’re also welcome to bring something sentimental, such as:
- A handmade blanket
- A family heirloom
- A special stuffed animal
- An item connected to your family’s hobbies or story
Please let me know ahead of time if you plan to bring something special. That allows me to think about how we can include it naturally without taking attention away from your baby.
6. What Happens if Your Baby Is Awake or Fussy?
Please don’t worry if your baby doesn’t sleep through the entire session. Some of the sweetest images happen when babies are stretching, looking around, yawning, or making those adorable newborn expressions.
If your baby needs to be fed, changed, rocked, or cuddled, we’ll simply take a break.
Every session is gently guided by your baby’s needs and comfort. There is no expectation for your baby or your family to “perform.”
7. Can Siblings Join the Newborn Session?
Absolutely! Sibling photographs can be such a special part of your newborn gallery.
If an older sibling will be joining us, consider bringing:
- A favourite snack
- Water or another drink
- A quiet activity
- A favourite comfort item
- A change of clothes, just in case
When possible, it can also be helpful to have another adult available to take siblings home or out for an activity once their portion is finished. This helps keep the remainder of the session calm while we focus on your baby.
There is no pressure for young siblings to cooperate perfectly. We’ll keep things relaxed, playful, and appropriate for their age.
8. How Long Does a Newborn Photography Session Take?
Newborn sessions are slow and intentional. The exact length will depend on the session you’ve selected and what your baby needs that day.
You can expect time for:
- Feeding and diaper changes
- Soothing and cuddling
- Gentle posing and wrapping
- Individual photographs of your baby
- Parent, sibling, and family portraits when included
Safety and comfort always come first, so we never rush through a pose or force something that isn’t working for your baby.
9. What Should You Bring to the Studio?
You don’t need to pack your entire nursery! Most families find it helpful to bring:
- Extra diapers and wipes
- Bottles or feeding supplies, if needed
- A pacifier, even if it is only used occasionally
- An extra outfit for parents and siblings
- Any sentimental item you would like photographed
- Snacks and an activity for siblings
I provide the newborn wraps, accessories, props, and other essentials needed to create your session.
10. Relax—You Don’t Need to Make Everything Perfect
This is your time to slow down.
You don’t need to worry about posing, stress about your baby’s mood, or have everything perfectly planned. Simply show up, take a breath, and soak in this season with your new baby.
You can even take the opportunity to relax or have a little nap while I photograph your baby—I’ll take care of the rest.
